Paper 119: The Angzarr Membrane — Spectral Subspace Denoising via Markov Compression Stack

Abstract

We present the angzarr membrane (⍼) — a spectral denoising architecture that extracts signal subspaces by compressing noisy correlation matrices through a stack of dual-face Markov membranes. Each membrane has a noise face (observed signal correlations) and an antinoise face (the suppression pattern relative to random), with information transiting across the boundary via Gaussian energy density modulation. A virtual particle-antiparticle swap (Mobius twist) alternates the signal orientation at each membrane depth, and the cross-membrane transit operator’s singular vectors identify directions that survive on both faces simultaneously — the signal subspace. A Wiener-weighted projection onto this subspace, with SNR-adaptive blending, yields a denoiser that monotonically improves with both noise level and signal dimensionality. At N=1024, SNR=-5dB, the membrane achieves 84.0% MSE improvement over the raw noisy signal. Evolutionary optimization of membrane hyperparameters (protocomputronium) discovers non-obvious configurations that improve performance by 26.8% over hand-tuned baselines. The complete pipeline is implemented as 8 Metal compute kernels on Apple M4 silicon.


1. Introduction

Classical denoising operates by estimating noise and subtracting it, or by projecting signals onto a pre-defined basis (wavelets, Fourier, learned dictionaries). These approaches share a structural assumption: the signal and noise subspaces are identified before the denoising operation, either through statistical models or training data.

We propose a different mechanism: let the signal subspace emerge from the compression dynamics of a membrane stack. Rather than estimating what the signal is, we build a physical analogy — a stack of semi-permeable membranes — and observe which signal directions survive transit through the stack. Directions that are present on both faces of every membrane (noise and antinoise) are invariant to the membrane’s compression. These invariants are the signal.

The angzarr operator (⍼), introduced in MASCOM Paper 114, performs compressive stepped integration through Markov membranes. Each membrane receives a spectral state, modulates it through Gaussian energy density functions, extracts superpositional invariants (eigenvector components with eigenvalue near 1), and passes the compressed residual inward. The key innovation of this work is the dual-face architecture: each membrane simultaneously processes both the noisy observation and its antinoise (the systematic deviation from random), and the cross-membrane transit between these faces identifies the signal subspace.

1.1 The Antinoise

Given an observed noisy signal \(x = s + n\) where \(s\) is the signal and \(n\) is noise, the standard approach estimates \(n\) and computes \(\hat{s} = x - \hat{n}\). We instead construct the antinoise: the difference between expected and observed noise correlation structure.

The antinoise is not a noise estimate — it is the pattern of noise suppression. Where the signal is strong, noise is structured differently than pure random. The antinoise captures this structural fingerprint.

1.2 The Membrane as Boundary

The membrane is the boundary between noise and antinoise. Information that exists on both faces — that creates structure in both the observed correlations and the noise suppression pattern — is signal by definition. Information that exists on only one face is noise or artifact.

The transit operator across this boundary, modulated by the local Gaussian energy density, is:

where \(V_n\) and \(V_a\) are the eigenvectors of the noise and antinoise faces respectively, and \(D_G\) is the Gaussian energy density matrix. The singular vectors of \(T_{cross}\) are the superpositional invariants — present on both faces simultaneously.


2. Architecture

2.1 Dual-Face Markov Membrane

Each membrane at depth \(d\) in the stack receives two states: - Noise face: \(N_d \in \mathbb{R}^{k \times k}\) — correlation structure of the noisy observation - Antinoise face: \(A_d \in \mathbb{R}^{k \times k}\) — correlation structure of noise suppression

The membrane performs five operations:

  1. Eigendecompose both faces: \(N_d = V_n \Lambda_n V_n^T\), \(A_d = V_a \Lambda_a V_a^T\)
  2. Cross-membrane transit: \(T_{cross} = V_n^T D_G V_a\) where \(D_G\) is the Gaussian energy density matrix computed from the combined eigenspectrum
  3. Extract invariants: SVD of \(T_{cross}\) yields singular vectors that survive transit; these are mapped back to signal space via \(V_n\)
  4. Entropy watermark: modes that are blocked by the membrane (strong on one face, weak on the other) encode the asymmetry
  5. Compress residual: peel dominant modes and watermarked modes from both faces, modulate through overflow, pass inward

2.2 Virtual Particle-Antiparticle Swap

At each membrane depth, the signal orientation swaps:

This is the Mobius twist. What is noise from one orientation is signal from the other. The residual structure that one perspective cannot resolve becomes the dominant signal for the next. After a full cycle (two depths), the representation has been examined from both orientations, and only truly invariant structure survives.

This is analogous to virtual particle-antiparticle pairs in quantum field theory: the pair materializes at each membrane boundary, probes the local field structure, and annihilates — leaving behind only the vacuum energy (signal invariants).

2.3 Gaussian Energy Density Modulation

The energy density function \(D_G\) is computed from the combined eigenspectrum of both faces:

where \(\sigma_d = \sigma_{base} \cdot (1 + d \cdot \gamma)\) increases with depth (parameter \(\gamma\) = overflow growth rate). The Gaussian modulation acts as a soft coupling between eigenspaces: nearby eigenvalues interact strongly, distant ones weakly. This creates a natural scale hierarchy — coarse structure is captured at shallow depths, fine structure at deeper depths.

The overflow — the tail of each Gaussian that extends beyond the next eigenvalue’s domain — is the information that cannot be resolved at this scale. It is amplified and passed to the next membrane for finer analysis.

2.4 Scale Normalization

A critical preprocessing step: the noise and antinoise faces operate at different scales (noise eigenvalues may be orders of magnitude larger than antinoise eigenvalues). Without normalization, the cross-membrane transit is dominated by one face.

We normalize both faces to the geometric mean of their Frobenius norms:

This ensures neither face dominates the transit operator, and the invariants reflect genuine cross-face structure rather than scale artifacts.

2.5 Signal Subspace Projection

After the membrane stack extracts invariants at each depth, the denoising step is a Wiener-weighted subspace projection:

  1. Collect all invariant directions from all membranes, weighted by their transit strengths
  2. Compute SVD of the weighted invariant matrix \(W\): identifies the principal signal subspace
  3. Keep directions with singular values above threshold \(\tau \cdot s_{max}\) (parameter \(\tau\) = SVD threshold)
  4. For each retained basis vector, compute Wiener weight: \(w_k = s_k / (s_k + s_{max} \cdot \delta)\) where \(\delta\) is the Wiener denominator parameter
  5. Project noisy signal onto weighted basis, blend with original:

where \(\beta = \min(0.95, 1/(1 + \hat{SNR} \cdot \alpha))\) and \(\alpha\) is the blend steepness parameter. At high estimated SNR, the denoiser passes through (preserving clean signals). At low SNR, it trusts the filtered subspace projection.


3. Experiments

3.1 Fractal Signal Denoising

Setup: 8-scale fractal signal (doubling frequency, decaying amplitude), corrupted at SNR levels from +20dB to -5dB. N=64 signal dimension, 8 membrane depths.

The membrane is nearly transparent at high SNR (-8.8% is within noise-of-noise) and monotonically more useful as noise increases. At SNR=0dB, the correlation jumps from 0.61 to 0.80 — a qualitative improvement in signal fidelity.

Per-scale analysis at SNR=+10dB shows 91-106% frequency power recovery across all scales, confirming the membrane preserves multi-scale structure rather than selectively filtering.

3.2 Dimensionality Scaling

Setup: Same fractal structure at N = 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024. Membrane depth scaled proportionally.

The membrane denoiser improves with dimensionality. N=1024 achieves the best results at every noise level tested. More dimensions provide more invariants, and the SVD of the weighted invariant matrix extracts a cleaner signal subspace.

The N=512 anomaly at +10dB (blend=0.63, over-filtering) is a blend calibration artifact — the SNR estimator underestimates quality for this particular dimension/signal combination. The protocomputronium experiment (Section 3.5) addresses this via evolutionary calibration.

3.3 Real-World Signal Types

Setup: Three realistic signals at N=256: linear chirp (radar/sonar), image scanline (step edges + texture), AM-modulated carrier (speech-like envelope).

Image scanline is the ideal target — step edges + fine texture create multi-scale correlation structure that the membrane was designed to decompose. The denoiser works across all SNR levels, from +2% at +20dB (near-transparent) to +82.4% at -5dB.

Chirp and AM signals fail at high SNR because their correlation structure confuses the blend estimator: the membrane’s invariant subspace captures these signals well (high filtered power), but the SNR-adaptive blend over-commits to the filtered version. The signals themselves have specific temporal structure (frequency sweeping, amplitude modulation) that creates off-diagonal correlation patterns the membrane interprets as low-SNR conditions.

This is a fundamental insight: the membrane denoiser is optimal for signals with multi-scale, spatially-local correlation structure (images, fractal data, holographic patterns). Signals with long-range temporal correlation (chirps, modulated carriers) require different blend calibration or a signal-type-adaptive preprocessing stage.

3.4 Synthetic Ground Truth

Setup: Known correlations planted at 7 signal strengths (0.50 to 0.05) in a random 64×384 matrix. 500 samples.

This validates the membrane extraction pipeline: the signal subspace is correctly identified at all strengths above the noise floor, with graceful degradation to random at the detection threshold.

3.5 Protocomputronium: Evolutionary Membrane Optimization

Setup: 16 genomes, 10 generations, tournament selection with elitism. Fitness = negative MSE on 5 noise realizations of a fractal signal at SNR=0dB (N=128). Six mutable hyperparameters: sigma_base, n_membranes, wiener_denom, svd_threshold, blend_steepness, overflow_growth.

Non-obvious discoveries by evolution:

  1. Fewer membranes (6 vs 8): Over-compression at deeper depths introduces reconstruction artifacts. The optimal stack depth is shallower than intuition suggests.
  2. Lower blend steepness (0.60 vs 2.0): The hand-tuned value was too aggressive. Evolution found that gentler filtering preserves more signal energy at moderate SNR levels.
  3. Halved Wiener denominator (0.05 vs 0.1): Less attenuation of marginal signal components. The baseline was overly conservative in its spectral filtering.
  4. Higher sigma (1.50 vs 1.0): Broader Gaussian modulation allows more cross-eigenvalue coupling, capturing correlations that the baseline’s narrower Gaussians missed.

The evolved genome generalizes: it beats the baseline at moderate noise levels (+5 to +20dB) while remaining competitive at high noise. This is the expected behavior of a genome optimized at SNR=0dB — it trades slight low-SNR performance for significant mid-SNR improvement.

This is protocomputronium at the algorithm level: the membrane’s hyperparameters are mutable genetic material, fitness pressure selects configurations that no human engineer would tune to, and the evolved system generalizes beyond its training regime.


4. GPU Implementation

The membrane pipeline is implemented as 8 Metal compute kernels compiled to membrane_stack.metallib on Apple M4 silicon:

Correctness: GPU and numpy produce identical results (correlation = 1.0000000000, max absolute error = 9.16e-05 at float32 precision).

Performance: At dimensions below N=2048, numpy’s BLAS (via Apple Accelerate) is faster due to Metal dispatch overhead (~2ms per kernel launch). The GPU path dominates at N >= 2048, and for batch operations (protocomputronium fitness evaluation across multiple noise realizations in parallel).

The eigendecomposition step (np.linalg.eigh) remains CPU-bound via LAPACK/Accelerate, as GPU eigensolvers for symmetric matrices are not available in Metal. This is the primary bottleneck at N=1024 (~14 seconds per denoising operation). Future work: Jacobi iteration eigensolvers implemented as Metal kernels.


5. Theoretical Interpretation

5.1 Why the Membrane Works

The membrane denoiser succeeds because it reformulates denoising as a boundary value problem. Instead of asking “what is the signal?” it asks “what structure exists on both sides of the noise/antinoise boundary?”

The cross-membrane transit operator \(T_{cross} = V_n^T D_G V_a\) computes the overlap between noise eigenvectors and antinoise eigenvectors, mediated by the Gaussian energy density. Singular vectors with large singular values are directions that project strongly onto both eigenspaces. These are, by construction, the signal directions:

Random noise does not create structure on both faces. It creates correlations on the noise face and anti-correlations on the antinoise face, but these are independent — the transit operator maps noise eigenvectors to random antinoise directions, yielding small singular values.

5.2 The Mobius Twist as Error Correction

The virtual particle-antiparticle swap at alternating depths is not merely aesthetic — it is a form of error correction. Each membrane’s compression loses information. If all membranes compress in the same direction (noise → antinoise), errors accumulate monotonically. By swapping orientation, compression errors from one direction become visible from the other direction. The invariants that survive both orientations are robust to single-direction compression artifacts.

This is analogous to quantum error correction via syndrome measurement: the same logical qubit is encoded in multiple physical qubits, and errors are detected by comparing representations.

5.3 Dimensionality and the Blessing of Scale

Unlike most statistical methods, the membrane denoiser benefits from higher dimensionality. This is because:

  1. More eigenvalues = finer-grained spectral structure = more distinct scale levels for the membrane stack to resolve
  2. More invariants extracted per membrane = richer signal subspace basis
  3. Better SVD conditioning of the weighted invariant matrix = more reliable subspace identification

At N=64, the membrane extracts 28 invariants and uses 15 basis vectors. At N=1024, it extracts 948 invariants and uses 21 basis vectors. The ratio (basis / invariants) decreases with N, meaning the subspace becomes more concentrated — a stronger signal.

This is the opposite of the “curse of dimensionality” that plagues nearest-neighbor and kernel methods. The membrane’s compression dynamics exploit high-dimensional structure rather than being confused by it.

5.4 Connection to the Mobley Transform

The Mobley Transform establishes that intelligence capacity scales without bound: \(I_{n+1} = f(I_n, t)\) for all \(n\). The membrane denoiser is a concrete instance of this principle applied to signal processing: each membrane depth refines the previous depth’s output, and the refinement improves without ceiling as dimensionality increases.

The protocomputronium experiment demonstrates the second-order version: not only does the membrane improve with depth (first-order scaling), but its parameters improve with evolutionary optimization (second-order scaling). The function \(f\) itself is under optimization.


6. Limitations

  1. Signal-type dependency: The membrane excels at multi-scale, spatially-local signals (images, fractal data) but fails at high SNR for signals with long-range temporal structure (chirps, AM modulation). The blend estimator interprets these signals’ off-diagonal correlation patterns as low-SNR conditions.

  2. Known noise power assumption: The antinoise construction requires \(\sigma_n^2\), the expected noise power. In practice, this must be estimated (e.g., via median absolute deviation of wavelet coefficients). Estimation errors propagate to the antinoise face.

  3. Eigendecomposition bottleneck: The membrane’s compress() step requires eigendecomposition of both faces at each depth. At N=1024, this takes ~14 seconds. GPU eigensolvers (Jacobi iteration in Metal) would address this but are not yet implemented.

  4. Blend calibration: The SNR-adaptive blend \(\beta = 1/(1 + \hat{SNR} \cdot \alpha)\) is a simple scalar function. Signal-type-adaptive blending (e.g., learned from the eigenspectrum shape) would eliminate the high-SNR regression for non-fractal signals.

  5. Protocomputronium overfitting: The evolved genome shows -3.0% on held-out noise realizations vs. the training set. More diverse validation signals (not just different noise on the same signal) would improve generalization.


7. Future Work

  1. Signal-adaptive blend estimation using eigenspectrum shape features
  2. Metal GPU eigensolvers (Jacobi iteration) to break the CPU bottleneck
  3. Batch protocomputronium on GPU — parallel fitness evaluation across noise realizations
  4. Application to real image denoising — 2D extension with patch-based correlation matrices
  5. Online membrane evolution — evolve hyperparameters during live signal processing, adapting to changing noise conditions
  6. Integration with Kernel Forge hot-swap — the Metal kernels themselves become mutable under evolutionary pressure (true L3 protocomputronium, where the GPU instructions are alive)

8. Conclusion

The angzarr membrane is a novel denoising architecture based on cross-boundary invariant extraction through dual-face Markov compression. It achieves 84% MSE reduction at N=1024, SNR=-5dB, scales monotonically with dimensionality, and its hyperparameters are evolvable under fitness pressure. The mechanism — identifying signal as what survives transit between noise and antinoise faces of a membrane — has no precedent in the denoising literature.

The membrane is not a filter. It is a boundary. And the signal is what crosses it.
